Do’s & Don’ts related to brushing the teeth

1)The twigs of trees with thorns or containing milk are considered auspicious for brushing the teeth.

2)The twigs of Apaamarg, Bel, Aak, Neem, Khair, Gular, Karanj, Arjun, Aam, Saal, Mahua, Kadamb, Ber, Kaner, Babool are considered beneficial (for teeth), while the twigs of Palaash, Lisoda, Dhav, Kush, Kaash, Kachanaar, Tendu, Shami, Reetha, Baheda, Sahijan, Semal are not considered beneficial thus shall not be used.

3)The twig which is short, and bitter is very healthy for the teeth.

4)Brushing the teeth with Mahua twig provides with a son, Ber twig makes one’s communication skills better, Brihati (bhatkataiya) twig makes one victorious over enemies, Aak twig relaxes the eyes, Bel and Khair twig gives one luxury, Kadamb twig vanquishes diseases, Atimuktak (Kund) twig gives wealth, Aatrushak (adusa) twig gives fame, Chameli twig provides respect, Peepal gives fame while Shirosh gives all types of wealth.

5)With one’s finger alone or with index finger one shall never brush his teeth, coal, sand, ash, nails, brick, and stone also shall not be used to clean the teeth.

6)The twig shall be straight, green, wet, and without any hole. A twig which has been cut from the middle, which has insects on it, dry, crooked, and a twig without its peel shall not be taken in use.

7)The twig shall be as thick as the little finger, straight and 12 fingers long.

8)The twig shall be washed before and after the use and shall be thrown in a clean place after use.

9)One shall chant this mantra while washing the twig (before use)-

      Aayurbalam yasho varchah prajaah pashuvasuni cha

    Brahma prajnaam cha medhaam cha tvam no dehi vanaspate

    Translation- O Vanaspati (tree), give me long life, prowess, fame, brilliance, good children, animals, wealth, the knowledge of Brahma, intelligence, and the ability to hold.

    10)One shall always face east or north while brushing and shall never face west or south.

    11)On Pratipada (1st tithi according to Hindu calendar/panchaang), Shashthi (6th), Navami (9th) and Amavasya (new moon day), one shall not use wooden twig to clean the teeth. Also wooden twig shall not be taken in use on Sunday, any day on which a person keeps a fast, Shraaddh, eclipse, during sunset.

    12)The one who uses twig on Amavasya he gets afflicted with the sin of hurting Chandra (moon), the one who uses twig during his fast, offering made by him is not accepted by Devata, he also angers his forefathers and thus lead to the destruction of his whole kula (family).

    13)One shall gargle/rinse his mouth 12 or 16 times on such days or in unavailability of a wooden twig.
